The US Department of Energy launched the Sunshot Initiative in 2011 with the goal of reducing the cost of solar energy by 75% by the end of the decade, to about 6 cents/kWh at a utility scale. That goal was met in 2017.
The goal for 2030 was initially set at 3 cents/kWh, currently the goal is 3 cents/kWh by 2025, 2 cents/kWh by 2030.
This market resolves to the first year in which the utility scale cost of solar energy drops to 2 cents/kWh as reported by the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy. The market close date may be adjusted if necessary.
