Background

Last year, New Zealand passed a law that bans the sale of tobacco to any person born after 1 January, 2009.

Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has proposed a similar law to "raise the smoking age by one year, every year" so that "a 14-year-old today will never legally be sold a cigarette and that they and their generation can grow up smoke-free."

It has been suggested that Australia, which has recently cracked down on vaping, could also introduce a 'next generation' ban on smoking.

Resolution criteria

This market will resolve YES if:

• a bill to introduce a next generation smoking ban is passed by any state or federal legislature in Australia; and

• such a bill receives royal assent before 12:00am (in the local time zone) on 1 January, 2025.

The market will resolve NO on 1 January, 2025 if one or both of these conditions is not met.

There is no foreseeable circumstance in which this market would resolve N/A.

Clarifications

For the purpose of this market, a 'next generation smoking ban' is a law that prohibits the sale of smoked tobacco products to all persons born after a certain date.

A 'state or federal legislature' includes the Commonwealth Parliament and the respective parliaments of the six states.
